Carolyn Coker Joslin Watson died 10/21 surrounded by her family after a year-long battle with cancer. She was our class valedictorian and went on to become an art history professor at Furman University. In addition to her great intelligence, she will be remembered for her loving spirit and her kindness to all. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends.

Carolyn and I were friends for 60 years, beginning in junior high school. We never missed a birthday call, visited each other very nearly every year, and talked with (for me) endless pleasure about art history, travels, and our families. Our children, too, came to know each other. She maintained important, close friendships with other members of our class. Carolyn was steadfast in every important way, and I believe she embodied a rare, profound “goodness.”

This is indeed sad news. Carolyn was full of equanimity, calmness and grace and never had an unkind word for anybody. A lovely, radiant person.

This world has lost one of its finest human beings. Carolyn Joslin Watson (a.k.a. Ownie) was brilliant, generous, compassionate, authentic, and HUMBLE. In a lifetime, how often does each of us get to know someone whose greatness includes preventing the less great from feeling inferior? Ownie had THAT kind of greatness.
So close to Ownie's passing, this is, for me, a time to mourn. But the day will come when "it's the laughter [I] will remember whenever [I] remember the way we were."
