Janet Guthrie, 59, died Thursday 16 December 2010 of ovarian cancer. Born in Urbana, IL, she was the daughter of Frank E. and Bernice B. Guthrie. After graduating in 1969 from Broughton High School in Raleigh, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from the University of Delaware and a Master of Public Affairs from NCSU. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Alpha Alpha,Pi Sigma Alpha, and numerous Environmental Health and Science organizations and committees. She retired from NIEHS in 2008 where she served as program analyst.
Predeceased by her father, Dr F.E Guthrie, Janet is survived by her sister Caroline and brother-in-law Jim Willard. Her extended family includes many caring, supportive, and patient friends who embraced her intelligence and quirky sense of humor and loved her just the way she was.
In lieu of flowers, Janet asked that donations be made to one or more of the following: The Frank E. Guthrie Memorial Scholarship; Hospice of Wake County; SPCA of Wake County.
A memorial service was held on 8 January 2011 at Hospice of Wake County.
